April-May 2019 Highlights

The final month of the school year with OYFA is a hectic one, but it is a month nonetheless made enjoyable by the company of our beloved family.

In a single month, we have celebrated a lot together. First, we held our annual culture show, Barrio, at the beginning of April. This year, it was titled "Alpas: The Unconfined" and featured a skit that highlighted the importance of discussing mental health in the Asian-American community.

A few days after Barrio, the final general body meeting of the school year was held. At the meeting, the 32nd OYFA Board and Council was introduced by last year's executive board and council chairs. It was a bittersweet hour together as our dear 31st B&C stepped down from their positions, moving on from a successful year of change and impact. Thank you for all that you've done for OYFA, 31st B&C!

On April 20, 2019, OYFA had their annual Kamayan at Garden IX, the event that celebrates the Filipino custom of eating with only one's hands. This year, on spreads of banana leaves at numerous tables, food such as rice, lumpia, grilled fish, chicken tocino, pancit, spam, and mango salsa were prepared for everyone to dig into together. Sweet Filipino delicacies like turon and piña colada ice candy were also thoughtfully made for dessert. To everyone who helped prepare the food, set up, and clean up, the event would not have been as successful as it was without you. Thank you!

This past semester, a group of first years also worked hard to prepare this year's Fourth Year Farewell celebration for our beloved Class of 2019 graduates. They compiled video messages from fellow classmates that expressed final thoughts for all their OYFAns while enjoying Taco Bell, two Benny Deluca's pizzas, 100 McDonald's nuggets, and Runk Dining Hall vanilla cupcakes. Food quality was only compensated by the time spent with one another.

On May 1, 2019, the End of Year Picnic at Booker T. Washington Park sadly marked the beginning of finals week for everyone, but also the end of a marvelous, successful school year. Bonding over hot dogs and burgers was made better by a few surprises that day such as Celine bringing her adorable bunny and the reveal of everyone's superlatives.

Have a great summer, OYFAm! One final congratulations to our amazing Class of 2019. Can't wait to see everyone else this fall!
